Vitiligo Skin Disorder

Vitiligo is the name of a skin disorder which causes depigmentation of patches of skin. Another name for Vitiligo Skin Disorder is Leukoderma. It occurs when the cells that make pigment in the skin called melanocytes, and the mucous membranes (tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose and genital and rectal areas), along with the retina (inner layer of the eyeball) are destroyed. Vitiligo can appear in various patterns of distribution.

For over thousands of years, this disease has been observed in different people, across the globe. Vitiligo is a common abnormality, which can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or race. Almost 1 out of every 100 people suffers from Vitiligo Skin Disorder.
This disease is distinguished by the appearance of depigmented patches on the skin. These patches can either be milky white, white, or light pink in color. The areas where these patches will most probably appear would include the parts of body that are exposed to sun, such as face, lips, neck, hands, arms, feet, etc. Plus, the depigmented patches may also be found around the mouth and eyes, groin, armpits, navel, rectal areas, and genitals.

Vitiligo can be classified into many ways, but the two main types are:

1) Generalized/ Non- Segmental
Non-segmental form of vitiligo is also identified as bilateral vitiligo, and it often appears in some form of symmetry on both sides of the body. This type of vitiligo can happen at any age.

2) Segmental
Segmental form of vitiligo affects only one area of the body where white patches appear. Mora than half of the patients suffering from segmental vitiligo have white hair patches in the scalp. This form is also called unilateral vitiligo and usually occurs in children. Also, it is less common than bilateral vitiligo.

There are several symptoms of vitiligo, other than the obvious ones of skin patches either in white or lighter color than the true color of the skin. People may also experience severe itching at the area that has been exposed to sun, but it usually doesn’t cause any physical distress. Graying of scalp hair, eyelashes, eyebrows or hair in other affected areas may also be experienced. And if, the disease is severe, then hair may also fall off in the affected areas. The white spots caused by vitiligo are normally more widespread over skeletal prominences.
